What is Bladder Prolapse Naples?

In women, the bladder is normally held in place by supportive floor muscles and tissue. A bladder prolapse or cystocele, is when these tissues are stretched or become week resulting in the bladder dropping and bulge through into the vagina. In more severe cases, the prolapse bladder can appear at the opening of the vagina and even protrude (drop) through the vaginal opening.

The bladder is an organ in the pelvis that has flexible and muscular walls. It’s function is to store the bodies urine (liquid waste made by the kidneys) before it leaves the body.

Urine is carried to the bladder through tubes called ureters which then expands as urine fills the bladder.

When one uses the bathroom, the muscles in the bladder will contract to then push the urine out through the body via a tube called the urethra.

When the cells of the bladder grow abnormally, they can become bladder cancer resulting in one or more tumors in the bladder.

Bladder Prolapse
Bladder prolapse is very common in women. Although bothersome it can be treated.

Symptoms include:

  • feeling of a vaginal bulge
  • frequent voiding or the urge to pass urine
  • urinary incontinence (unwanted loss of urine)
  • not feeling relief right after voiding
  • frequent urinary tract infections
  • pain in the vagina, pelvis, lower abdomen, groin or lower back
  • heaviness or pressure in the vaginal area
  • sex that is painful
  • tissue sticking out of the vagina that may be tender and/or bleeding
Some cases of prolapse may not cause any symptoms.

Causes

Prolapse can develop for many reasons. The major cause is stress on this supportive “hammock” when giving birth. Women who have many pregnancies, deliver vaginally, or have long or difficult childbirth are at higher risk.

Other factors that can lead to prolapse are:

  • heavy lifting
  • chronic coughing (or other lung problems)
  • constipation
  • frequent straining to pass stool
  • obesity
  • menopause (when estrogen levels start to drop)
  • prior pelvic surgery
  • aging
